God’s Divine Protection

Sometimes it’s easy to forget about our complete dependence upon God in our daily affairs. Our lives are often busy and filled with a myriad of activities from the home to the work place. It’s good to be reminded now and then that we are not self-sufficient beings who do not need Gods ultimate intervention in our lives.

This is an excerpt from a prayer attributed to St. Patrick. The legend behind the prayer is that the High King of Tara planned to ambush and kill Patrick to prevent him from spreading the gospel into Ireland. As Patrick and his men approached, singing this hymn, the king’s soldiers saw only a herd of wild deer and let them pass by.

There are many translations of this hymn available online. This is just one of the versions that I have often spoken in my morning prayers.

This day I call to me
God’s strength to direct me,
God’s power to sustain me,
God’s wisdom to guide me,
God’s eye to look before me,
God’s ear to hear me,
God’s Word to speak to me,
God’s hand to uphold me,
God’s pathway before me,
God’s shield to protect me,
God’s legions to save me,
From snares of devils,
From evil enticements,
From failings of nature,
From one man or many
Who seek to destroy me from near or afar.

Not a bad way to kick off your day if you ask me…
