There’s a picture that made its way around the internet that is, to be honest, a little funny. Kenny G with jazz legend Miles Davis. Kenny looks thrilled to be in the photo; Miles looks … not thrilled.

This photo pretty much sums up the consensus of the jazz community. Jazz purists typically consider Kenny G a joke. They consider his music to be just one step above elevator music. Most Jazz musicians don’t even want to call his music ‘Jazz.’

But Kenny G sells a ton of records and has a huge number of fans. And he does it without asking other musicians to give him their stamp of approval.

He once said, “I live my life and play my music, and I don’t really seek out other people’s approval or accolades or things like that. I try to do what’s true to me, and how it all comes out is fine.”

No matter what you personally think of Kenny G’s music (assuming you have an opinion at all), his attitude is a good model to follow. Your worst critics might think that your life is not much more than elevator music. But their opinion doesn’t matter. What should matter to us is the opinion of our God and Creator. What does He see when he looks at your life? What does He see when fixes His gaze into your heart? I trust its a life and heart that is striving to serve and please Him and not man.

“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God?
Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man,
I would not be a servant of Christ.” (Galatians 1:10)
