“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, for by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” Ephesians 2:8-9
We live in a day and age where false gospels flourish within the church.
Maybe the most amazing fact gleaned from Christian history appears in Galatians 1:6: “I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel.”
When the apostle Paul penned this epistle in the early AD 50s, only two decades had passed since the death and resurrection of Christ and the founding of the church. It took only twenty years before someone perverted the gospel into something so different that it was no longer “good news” (verse 7)!
How can you tell whether or not you have the true gospel? Paul gives you three tests. We will just mention these here today and go into them further in the coming weeks.
First, the source of the gospel. Where did it come from? God gave it. It is direct and divine revelation. The gospel is authenticated by its source.
Secondly, by its salvation. Any gospel that is not the gospel of grace is not the true gospel. You can’t beg it. You can’t buy it. You can’t borrow it. You can’t steal it. You can’t earn it. It was bought by Christ on the cross. It is the supernatural work of God.
The third test is its subject. Is the grace of Christ Jesus is the subject? From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible is all about Jesus.
